Mazegou Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located at an east-west gully (E112°49′, N37°03′) between the villages of Baihai and Zhaozhuang, about 12 km west of Yushe County, Shanxi Province. It was named by Qiu et al. (1987).
Lithology and Thickness
The Mazegou Fm is characterized by a series of yellow sandstones interbedded with purplish-red clays, which are gradually changing into purplish-red clays. It contains abundant mammalian fossils. Its thickness is in range of 180~200 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, the Mazegou Fm unconformably contacts with the underlying Lower Pliocene Gaozhuang Fm.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Mazegou Fm is unconformably overlain by the Lower Pleistocene Haiyan Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is restricted in area of Zhaozhuang, Damalan, Xiaomalan, and Louzeyu,in the Yushe Basin, Shanxi Province.
