Mazegou Formation

Mazegou Fm

Period:
Neogene

Age Interval:
Late Pliocene (Piacenzian), N2 , (17b)

Province:
Shanxi

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at an east-west gully (E112°49′, N37°03′) between the villages of Baihai and Zhaozhuang, about 12 km west of Yushe County, Shanxi Province. It was named by Qiu et al. (1987).

Lithology and Thickness

The Mazegou Fm is characterized by a series of yellow sandstones interbedded with purplish-red clays, which are gradually changing into purplish-red clays. It contains abundant mammalian fossils. Its thickness is in range of 180~200 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

In the type section, the Mazegou Fm unconformably contacts with the underlying Lower Pliocene Gaozhuang Fm.

Upper contact

In the type section, the Mazegou Fm is unconformably overlain by the Lower Pleistocene Haiyan Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is restricted in area of Zhaozhuang, Damalan, Xiaomalan, and Louzeyu,in the Yushe Basin, Shanxi Province.

Age

Teilhard and Young (1933) assigned this formation to the Sanmen Stage. The recent magnetic dating of the Hanyan Fm is in range of 2.8~3.7 Ma (Opdyke et al., 2013). The Mazegou Fm and Fauna are the fundamentals of the Mazegouan Stage of the continental Pliocene series in China (Deng and Hou, 2011). Tao Deng et al. (2019; Neogene integrated stratigraphy and timescale of China) show it as spanning the Piacenzian.
